The Black Death

Black Death in Europe (beginning)

The Black Death happened in the Middle Ages from 1346-1353 AD in Europe and Asia (mostly Europe though). An estimated 75 - 200 million people were killed by the plague. Many historians believed that the Black Death was the Bubonic Plague and that it came from China, when the Mongols controlled and had opened up the Silk Road again for trade to China.

The plague was most likely brought through Italy (Messina, Sicily, Italy) first, when 12 Genoese trade ships landed there after trading. The locals discovered that the traders on the ships were very weak, and many others were dead, and soon they sent the ships away, but it was too late, the disease had got into the island. Fearful that the disease would get to them, many fled to Corsica and Sardinia, where the disease spread, and soon spread into Europe, as people from the other islands fled to mainland Italy.

China received two attacks by the plague, but got well over it, but Europe suffered terribly, well because due to the fact that they are in the Dark Ages, so advances in medicine was poor. So much people died of the plague that most people weren't even buried--just left on the streets to decay. The plague covered victims with fever, black boils that ooze blood, and pus, that grows all over them. In a few days, the disease will take them away.

Plague doctors, as it was called by historians, when out trying to help people, but did not really help, but the doctors wore masks, and coverings, and even glasses to keep the air out--because they think that the air caused the disease, and the suit protected many plague doctors from getting the disease. Yet, they didn't know that the suits they wear looks like the suit scientists wear when doing a science experiment.

Other doctors used herbs thinking that it was useful, but no, nor did the idea of draining lots of blood to 'bleed' the disease out. Bleeding the disease out killed many instead of saving them, and so the treatments, (really ironic) killed people instead of saving them.

Many scientist believe that rats had the disease and the fleas on them carries it to the people. Owls and rats existed together in Europe, and there were no accounts of mass rat deaths, nor owl deaths, during the time, or even before the Black Death.

Yet still the churches in Europe believe that God was punishing them. Yet, one pope of the church was unaffected by the disease, he was perfectly well, and he lived pass the plague while others died, meaning that God was with him...right?

Historians believed that the disease was spread by rats, others say by the air, even others say that gerbils spread the plague, and still others say that it was a punishment was from God.

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK SPREAD THE DISEASE---OR IS THE BUBONIC PLAGUE PART OF THE BLACK DEATH, OR IT WAS ANOTHER DISEASE THAT WAS THE BLACK DEATH? OR COULD IT BE FROM THE SEA??
